A new political storm has started in the Lok Sabha. During a debate on the Delimitation Bill 2026, Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya made a controversial comment about how Telangana was separated from Andhra Pradesh in 2014.
The MP criticized the way the Congress government handled the state’s division, saying it was done even “worse than the India-Pakistan partition.”
The Comparison that Sparked Anger
Tejasvi Surya’s comment did not go down well with leaders from Telangana. While he was trying to attack the Congress party’s management of the bifurcation (split) in 2014, his comparison to the 1947 partition has been called “insensitive” and “insulting” by many.
Backlash from BRS and Congress
Leaders from both the BRS and the Congress party in Telangana have strongly condemned the remarks. They pointed out that Telangana was formed after decades of struggle, hundreds of protests, and the sacrifice of over 1,000 people who died for the cause of a separate state.
Opposition leaders are now demanding an apology from the BJP MP. They say that comparing a hard-fought democratic movement to the violent India-Pakistan partition is an insult to the people of Telangana.
The Defense
On the other hand, some BJP leaders defended the MP. They argued that he wasn’t attacking the formation of the state itself, but was instead highlighting the “mismanagement” and the “unscientific” way the Congress party rushed the division in 2014, which left many issues between Andhra and Telangana unresolved even 12 years later.
This debate has once again brought back strong regional feelings as the state approaches the 2026 delimitation (redrawing of seats) process.
